KC Newsletter! April 2024

SEASON OF BOOK

Hi hi!

This felt like a really productive month for networking! Mutiny is officially the second comic shop on the planet to carry Kidd Commander books (next to Danny the Comic Shop), I met Jim and The Professor at Wicked West and they were really into the comic! The shops in Fort Collins still have a 100% Ghost Rate but Denver is working out really well for me so far; if you’re in the area and want to help make me look like a good investment AND help out a local shop maybe stop in and grab a book!

As always if you got the spoons for it and you’d like to see KC on your local store shelves (or in your library!! I really wanna start working with more libraries!!), tell them to get in touch with me! For whatever reason nobody seems keen to work with me as a rule, but if a reader or customer requests me maybe I’ll have better luck.

Newsletter start!

This month’s finances and what all got done!

April numbers:

Five pages went up on the site since the last newsletter, I definitely had time for more but chronic pain was a bitch this month and I’ve been trying to be responsible about it; hopefully I’m on the other side of it for now. Typing doesn’t exacerbate it as much as drawing though, and I got around 15k words written! Another 10 on the novel, and five of it went to the latest fic on my ao3 account hehe. My paycheck was, somehow, about $360 again; we actually got three new supporters this month but they got nerfed by declined pledges across other members unfortunately. Next month should look better! The next little notch on the Phin Meter gets filled in when we hit 450, it would be cool to get there by the time June rolls around.

Free Comic Book Day 2024!

The place I was supposed to do an appearance quit responding to me, so I’m not appearing anywhere this year! I hope they’re not expecting me, at least. Oh well! Honestly I think it’ll be fun to have the day to wander around in a state that knows what free comic book day is lmao. Maybe head over to your local shop and see if they’re doing anything this year! As I mentioned, one shop that IS working with me is Mutiny in Denver, who apparently has all kinds of shenanigans going on for FCBD every year, so if you’re around you should definitely go check it out. I’m not sure if Danny is doing anything (Note: Danny is the shop, Cliff is the owner) but I know they’d appreciate your business anyway. It’s a small, cozy shop too, so the crowds might be more tolerable if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing.

Every day is free comic day for a webcomic, but you’ll be able to get KC Special! #2 in the ko-fi shop as a pay what you want pdf all day this Saturday! And most of today, everybody be cool.

At Last…volume 3 restock… (also keychains!)

GOD. GODDDDD. I cover most of it in the shop listing, but this will work the same way other restock preorders do EXCEPT. I am so hype to be able to reprint these goddamn things I’m doing Fancy Preorder Bonuses, which I don’t normally do unless a new book is coming out! If you weren’t a book club supporter last time this is your shot to get a lot of the stuff that came out with the original printing, and if you WERE and already have your copy there’s an option to just get the new preorder treats if you want those.

As a reminder since there are a lot of new folks here (wow!): book club rewards unfortunately only trigger when a new thing goes to print for the first time, since there’s no way for me to keep up with who already does or doesn’t have books I printed years ago. I wish I COULD send out books to newer supporters every time I do a restock, but the logistics would be horrific, I’d lose a ton of money, and the risk of people exploiting the system is High. If you’d like one of these books you’ll have to order it, either through the preorders or once they’re in stock. Thank you for your understanding!

All that said, keep in mind that my books WILL be in regular stock after the preorders are over, there’s no pressure to get one right now unless you want the extra stuff!! Hopefully, hopefully, they won’t be sold out for so long now that I’ve found a new printer.

Less pressing, I found a few more various kc keychains so they’ve kinda been restocked! I also opened up a really odd keychain preorder listing for the convenience of some Discord members; use it if you like, but please read the description carefully!

Novel Stuff!

I hope you liked the sample I sent out last month! If you missed it, there are links in last month’s letter.

I’m nearly finished with the first third of the initial draft, and so far I’m thinking we’ll probably be able to keep the whole thing under 120k words. Fingers crossed lmao. I’d really really like to be able to get this to print so I’m gonna do my best.

I always start with a three-act structure, but MHE stuck to it the most out of all my work so far I think, so my plan of attack here is to finish a draft of each third then go back and edit the shit out of it. Then finish the whole thing and edit them individually again, then all of them as a whole. Are there better ways to write books? Probably. I remain classically untrained hehe

I’m having a wonderful time getting into like, the sensory descriptions of characters; working on prose makes me appreciate how comfortable I am making comics and all the cool things about the medium I take for granted, but being able to get so personal with things in prose is like having a whole extra language to play with. I’m also working on some goofy fanfiction lately and someone there commented that reading about KC characters in prose rather than in comics is like seeing them in slow motion. The comic feels Fast, the prose feels like slowing down enough to really sit with them and understand where they’re coming from. That’s a cool observation!! Telling stories is cool.

Thanks!

Chronic pain sucks ass, don’t be like me! Take breaks, stretch your hands and shoulders, drink water and perhaps do not pursue a career that requires you to draw thousands of comic pages. Or do, but remember there are Horrors.
