This issue: Winter postcards, novel restock, Recovering

This month’s finances and what all got done!

I am painfully aware we missed the drop date for the next comic sequence, I’ll get into it a little more in a minute but the bullet points are that I got exhausted after the novel came out last month and the pages in this batch are very dense. It’s taking a little longer than I wanted, but it’s being worked on and the pages are going to be Good, please hang in there.

I’m making substantial progress with the second novel! Once my stamina levels out I’m going back to aiming for daily writing goals; for now, I haven’t been keeping much of a tally, but we’re about ten thousand words into the draft. Exciting!

Paycheck INCREASED very slightly to 915 a month, somehow! It’s all happening baby.

I’m trying to keep my head down and work on the update so I don’t have too much news for you this month! But here’s what I got:

Postcards

I really thought the postcards would go out late this time since I totally 100% fucking forgot to work on them while dealing with the novel release and the last convention appearance for the year and the usual amount of stress around the family responsibilities at the end of the year, but! They came together! Sort of at the expense of getting the comic update done when I intended, but between the two the update schedule is more malleable; I send out physical rewards to supporters so infrequently I hate to drop the ball there. I like this bundle a lot and I hope y’all do too! Please look forward to it.

Shop restock, Itch.io sale

Both editions of the novel are in stock in my shop again if you’ve been waiting for that! I’m currently out of Volume 2 and to be honest I have no idea when I’ll be able to get more printed, but all the other books are there if you need them. I figured out like a week ago I can set up more than one linktree, which is much tidier than making a whole goddamn post about it every time, so if you’d like some other methods of picking up the novel you can see all of them listed here.

I’ve put the digital version of Volume 4 up for purchase, but for the next few days I’d recommend picking it up on Itch.io, where I’m running a sale on all of my work! You can get the epub of the novel for a dollar, pick and choose whatever individual thing you need to finish your collection at a huge discount, or you can get everything I’ve ever published for nine bucks. Neat! If we make it that far, the first $250 will go to paying off some debt I have leftover from publishing Grist to the Cannon; anything after that will go to the usual place my profits go, which is buying groceries and paying rent so I can eat food and sleep in a house while I keep working on Kidd Commander.

Flirting with burnout

Like, I’m mostly fine, it’s all good, but the other reason the pages are late is because I wasn’t really finished crashing after the book came out. I can’t afford like Capital B Burnout, so I think I’ve been coasting along at like half capacity while I bounce back. It’s not ideal but that’s how it is with ongoing projects like this, I knew what I was getting into. This isn’t the first time it’s happened and won’t be the last so please don’t worry! I’ve been working on sketching for fun more often and I’ve put another five thousand words into the next chapter of Honest Work, both of which are helping a lot. The sketches I’ve posted are on the nsfw side and I don’t post them outside of tumblr, but if you’d like to you can see that blog here. The nsfw stuff I elect to share is generally very tame and it’s not a secret or anything, I just try to keep it out of the way so KC readers who would rather not see that sort of stuff don’t stumble into it unaware.

State of the artist

Burnout aside I seem to be entertaining a manic episode lately; I am all over the goddamn place on my personal social medias. It’s not necessarily unpleasant for me personally but I’m very aware this can be difficult for people trying to keep up with me. It probably doesn’t affect y’all here on the newsletter, which is what the newsletter is for in the first place, but here’s a gentle reminder that if you (or somebody you’re recommending my work to) would like to follow some accounts that don’t feel like drinking from the hose you can try:

Bsky
The comic Mastodon
The comic’s Tumblr
My writing Tumblr, which is where I’ve been trying to catalogue my prose thoughts outside of my personal blog.

Oh! I also posted my inktober sketches in a youtube video, if that’s something you’d be interested in. I used the event to get familiar with a new inking nib, so the drawings are a bit rough, but it might be interesting anyway just for the novelty. I’m really enjoying working in my hobonichi, I have a lot of ideas for it next year but we’ll see what the stamina situation is looking like when we get there.

One family holiday down, hope it was as pleasant as it could be for you.

I love going to conventions! And other comic-flavored things now I guess! If there’s an event in or around Colorado you’d like to see me at, contact the coordinators and have them get in touch with me.
